March 2006,
Shalom Dear Friends and Supporters of the Olim Fund,
March has been another banner month with all sorts of breakthrough
happenings.
Thanks to the generosity of a faithful donor who gave a designated
offering, and other sources we were able to complete the "job"
we started last month to provide an artificial eye and accompanying
cosmetic surgery for a middle aged single woman who lost her job
as a seamstress as a result of an accident that rendered her "unattractive."
This is a particularly heart warming example of the kind of things
that you are able to accomplish through your Fund.
In another case, a struggling wood working artist and sculptor
was recently diagnosed with Stage 4, metastasized prostate cancer.
While he is undergoing a seven week course of radiation treatment
he will be unable to work and the family, already in serious debt,
was only marginally able to survive even before this illness became
apparent. You have now provided enough money for them to keep
their home and not risk the possibility of living without utilities
and adequate food during this very difficult time which will extend
for several months.
I can't tell you how thrilled we are to see our donation base
grow, along with corresponding urgent situations that come to
our attention that we are now able to help---all, because you
care about these dear people who are hurting and you are able
and willing to reach out to them.
As another good news item, Tamara Silverman has joined us as the
latest addition to our Board of Directors. Even before she heard
about your Fund, Tamara had been given both a vision and a calling
to get involved with exactly the kind of work your Fund is doing
on your behalf. She, her husband and six children made aliyah
more than a year ago from Florida. She is originally from Ecuador
where she came from a very small community of Ecuadorian Jews.
Again, many, many thanks for your continued outreach to the Jewish
immigrants of Israel who have fallen on hard times and who are
struggling to survive. You can be sure that our wonderful God
will be true to His Word and that you will be greatly blessed.
In His great love,
Bob Fischer

This 43 year old single woman lost
one of her eyes in a tragic accident. As a result of
her unattractively altered appearance, she lost her
good job as a seamstress and has been unable to find
a new employment for the same reason. She desperately
needs a surgery that will install an artificial eye
so she can get her life going again. She has no medical
insurance and this procedure will cost $2,286. Last
month he Fund dug very deep into our limited assets
and provided $1, 852 towards her urgent requirement.
This month we have made up the remainder of the
requirement through the generosity of one of our faithful
donors and the profit from the sale of my books. Her
reconstructive surgery is scheduled for May 1.

This very large family was forced to
move to a smaller, less expensive apartment in order
to survive financially. In the process they incurred
double expenses (for both apartments) for one month
that they are unable to pay and still provide for their
most basic survival expenses.

The wife of this middle aged couple
had to return to Russia for two months to care for her
dying father. During her absence, all government assistance
was terminated. She has now returned and they are attempting
to restore the lost assistance. In the meantime, they
are unable to meet rental, food and other survival level
requirements.

The 43 year old wife suffered a major
stroke three months ago, and is now at home after a
long hospitalization. Shortly afterwards, her mother-in-law,
who lives with them, broke an arm in multiple places,
and is not able to care for her daughter-in-law who
needs constant, hands on care. Consequently, the husband
was forced to quit his job and remain home to care for
both his wife and mother. The result was a total absence
of income, with no government support.

This widowed pensioner with sever back
problems lives alone in a government furnished apartment
that is in deplorable condition. The roof leaks and
consequently the entire place and everything in it is
covered with thick mold. His mattress is literally rotten
with the springs jutting through the covering and the
wooden frame itself is rotten and crumbling. We are
making an effort to intercede on his behalf with the
government agency in charge of this building where he
lives. In the meantime, this gift is to buy him a new
bed and mattress.

This couple who live in a government
provided apartment had a pipe explode in their kitchen
causing considerable damage which they, in part, were
deemed responsible to repair. In addition, the wife
takes an expensive medication not in the “basket” available
from their government supported clinic. Thus, they must
pay for this privately.

The husband is a gifted wood working
artist who was making a survival level income from his
work that was and is still being augmented by local
sales of his work. He was recently diagnosed with Stage
4 prostate cancer that has already spread, and he will
soon begin a seven week radiation course in Haifa that
will require daily trips by bus to and from that location.
At best, he will be unable to work for at least three
months and the loss of his income has already been a
major blow to the family that is now at risk of losing
their small settlement house for non payment of their
mortgage. This gift will help them keep their home and
to otherwise survive until government assistance can
be implemented.
